What is Acne?
Nearly 100% of people between the ages of twelve and seventeen have had at least one occasion where they find a pimple, blackhead or whitehead somewhere on their body.
Acne Vulgaris (Acne for short) is a term that refers to clogged pores, deep lumps (cysts and nodules) and pimples that can occur on ones shoulders, neck, chest, face, legs, buttocks or back. Acne generally affects more teenagers but is not uncommon in adults aged 30-40. Young men are more likely than young women to have longer lasting more severe forms of acne. Given this fact, young men are still less likely to visit a dermatologist for their acne. Young women can also have intermittent acne due to hormonal changes associated with their menstural cycle and acne caused by cosmetics.
In a recent study done, research has shown that by their mid-teens more than 40% of adolescents have had acne severe enough to require some sort of treatment given to them by their physician.
